Bowls of St. Thomas

Bowls - Archeological Museum of the Flagellatin, Jerusalem

The basins of Bethlehem, which in their interior narrate the life of St. Thomas, were probably made for liturgical use. The stories engraved with a burin (or graver) are enclosed within two inscriptions in Gothic letters, above and below.

Similar works from the same workshop are on display at the Louvre and British Museum. They have been dated to the 12th century.
